I have enjoyed writing for as long as I can remember. In school, I would often write for myself exclusively simply because it was fun. I would often write about something I was struggling with, whether a school assignment or a decision I had to make. It frequently led me to the solution I needed. In my professional career, I enjoyed writing about software metrics and also about spiritual growth. They seem disconnected, but I find that only when I am grounded spiritually can I function effectively in the technical world since many technical decisions have a necessarily moral foundation. In addition to my recently published first novel, Hunting Saleh, I have authored two books as the sole author, Software Quality Assurance and Evaluation, published by ASQC Quality Press, and Take My Hand: A Personal Retreat Companion. I have contributed chapters to other edited technical books, and have written several articles on software quality and on Critical Success Factors for management, the subject of my doctoral dissertation. I also have a podcast site where I store the adult religious education classes I teach – Http://yorked.podomatic.com.My professional journey has been varied and interesting. I joined IBM Federal Systems Division in 1965 and worked there for 21 years on a variety of highly innovative programs, including serving on the Flight Support Team for the Apollo Program in Houston. In 1985 and 1986, I was selected to participate in the exchange of distinguished engineers and scientists program and visited France as a state guest to discuss my work in software reliability. After leaving IBM, I entered government service as a GS-15-10, to serve as a professor of acquisition management at the National Defense University and then at the Defense Acquisition University where I was also Associate Dean and Director of Research and Consulting. I was on the Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 1993. I am a 1996 graduate of the Federal Executive Institute (FEI) program, Leadership in a Democratic Society. I am DAWIA Level III in Program Management, a PMP and a Certified Quality Analyst (CQA).I retired from the Government in 2003 and subsequently joined MITRE Corporation, supporting DoD and the Intelligence Community (IC). I was on the team which conducted a Congressionally Directed Independent Assessment of a major intelligence program from Sept 2005 through Jan 2006. In 2011 and again in 2013 I was on the team which conducted an Independent Assessment of a DOJ unit in Clarksburg, WVa. During the time I supported the intelligence community in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, I was a technical advisor to the source selection team on multiple source selections. I also prepared acquisition documentation for a $1.2B acquisition for technical services, including the Acquisition Strategy, Acquisition Plan, Statement of Work, Source Selection Plan and RFP. I retired from MITRE at the end of 2015.I am enjoying retirement teaching, making functional pottery in my home studio, and writing. I ventured into fiction writing and in January 2020 my first novel, Hunting Saleh, was published by Black Rose Writing, a publisher in Texas. Hunting Saleh is about a ruthless, cold, merciless world class terrorist called Saleh with a diabolical plan to take out the President, Vice-President, the Supreme Court, and most of the heads of Federal Departments, all in the same place at the same time. The protagonist, Louise McCabe, is a former intelligence analyst with the Defense Intelligence Agency, who knows more about Saleh than anyone else. When the FBI discovers Saleh is here in the United States, and near Washington DC, Louise is called in to help find out why Saleh is here and to help stop whatever this monster is up to. It soon becomes a battle of wits between Saleh and Louise.I am also an attorney-at-law licensed in Virginia. My PhD is in Program Management of Science, Technology and Innovation. My dissertation is on Critical Success Factors (CSF) for Program Management and I am a member of MENSA. When not writing or making pottery, I offer executive and managerial consulting to help managers define what their personal CSF are in their present position.
