Gemini Divided (Chapter 1)

Let's be realistic: an assassin doesn't get a happily ever after, and this is not a fairy tale.

For the past two years, Jen Calley has set aside her morals to work as an assassin so she can pay for her mother’s chemotherapy treatments. The fact that her targets have been horrible people does nothing to relieve her guilt. But when Jen’s next mark is Will Bryant, her celebrity crush and the star of her favorite TV show, Gemini Divided, her two lives collide spectacularly.

Steeling herself against her swooning inner fangirl, Jen goes undercover on the Gemini Divided set as Will’s new assistant. To both her delight and dismay, he’s even kinder and more down to earth in person than she ever hoped. But now her resolve to kill him evaporates every time she looks in his eyes…which is a problem, because Jen’s choices are: a) kill a man she genuinely likes and keep her mother alive, or b) somehow save him, putting her in grave danger and leaving no way to fund her mother’s treatments.

No pressure, right?

With her mysterious employer getting impatient, Jen is given an ultimatum: she has two days to kill Will, or the deal’s off. Two days to decide what choices she can and cannot live with; two days to figure out just how far she’ll allow herself to be pushed before she pushes back…

""In her sparkling debut, Roberts spins a snappy tale of an idealistic hired assassin who is assigned to kill the star of her favorite TV show. Army veteran Janine "Jen" Calley turns into a hired killer after her former commanding officer starts a mercenary agency that allows her to pay for her mother's cancer treatments. Used to knocking off those who arguably deserve it—terrorists, traffickers, and other bad guys—Jen is flummoxed and alarmed when her latest assignment is to kill handsome Will Bryant, star of the action show Gemini Divided, who couldn't possibly have skeletons in his closet. Or does he? Superfan Jen spends her off hours writing fanfic about the show in her favorite coffee shop and digs deep to find out why someone wants to kill Will. When one of her aliases, Stephanie Murray, is magically offered a job as Will's new assistant, Jen's on the first plane to Los Angeles. As she gets closer to Will, Jen likes what she sees and decides she can't follow through with the assignment. But she knows that if she doesn't—someone else will. Roberts's engaging voice and strong plotting make it easy to get lost in this polished story. She does a masterful job of showing rather than telling as she rockets through this fast-paced narrative, and her scintillating prose, canny dialogue, and multi-layered characters (it's hard to make an assassin sympathetic, but Roberts makes it look easy) combine to create a memorable crowd pleaser. She offers a playful look at the nuts-and-bolts of reality TV while expertly lacing red herrings through the action-filled plot, keeping readers guessing until the final page is turned. Villains are disposed of in suitable fashion in a crisply described high-stakes gun battle, and the emotionally satisfying finale will please lovers of both romance and suspense.""
